Professor John Haltiwanger elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

Professor Haltiwanger has been elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, one of the very highest honors in academia: https://www.amacad.org/new-members-2025

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences "is both an honorary society that recognizes and celebrates the excellence of its members and an independent research center convening leaders from across disciplines, professions, and perspectives to address significant challenges."

Department Chair Andrew Sweeting describes Haltiwangers's appointment as follows: “The American Academy of Arts & Sciences recognition of John’s contributions to economics is richly deserved.  John joined UMD’s faculty in 1987, and is world-renowned for his contributions to the understanding productivity, entrepreneurship and economic dynamism, and the accurate measurement of microeconomic and macroeconomic activity.  John is the foundation stone of a long-running collaboration between our department and the US Census Bureau that has benefitted tens if not hundreds of PhD students, many of whom have established their own careers studying similar questions.  John is also an exceptional leader within the department, and continues to help guide the department’s thinking about its own future.”
