Professor Haltiwanger's Research Featured in the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post
New research on the decline in startups by John Haltiwanger, Professor of Economics, was featured in the Washington Post. The study, co-authored with Ryan Decker, economist at the Federal Reserve Board (and recent PhD from the University of Maryland), Ron Jarmin and Javier Miranda, economists at the U.S. Census Bureau, was recently released as NBER Working Paper No. 21776. The study finds that since 2000 there has been an acceleration in the decline in startups in the U.S. In addition, businesses that have started up since 2000 are less likely to be the high growth firms that have historically been critical for innovation, job creation and productivity growth.
