COMPARATIVE INSTITUTIONAL ECONOMICS

This page last updated: Thursday, May 15, 2008.

Comparative Institutional Economics Field: The field is administered by Peter Murrell.

The courses are:
Economics 681, Comparative Institutional Economics I
Meets in Fall semester, taught by Peter Murrell.  See Econ 681 Syllabus Fall 2007
Economics 682, Comparative Institutional Economics II
Will not be offered in Spring 2008, but Peter Murrell is willing to offer a readings course in comparative institutions for students committed to the field.

Field Requirements.
Major Field.  Econ 681 and Econ 682 plus one other course.  If Econ 681 or Econ 682 is not offered then an appropriate substitution would be a readings course in institutional economics.  Other options can be discussed with faculty members in the field.  The third course would be a complementary one from another field.
Average grade of B+ in the three courses fulfilling the field requirements.
Either a field paper or a field exam covering Econ 681 and Econ 682 (or an alternative course if one of these is not offered).  The decision on which option to take should be in consultation with the pertinent faculty members.  Normally the paper would constitute beginning work on a dissertation, a substantial paper due by the middle of the Spring semester of the third year.  A satisfactory field paper must be completed in order for a faculty member to commit to be the student's dissertation adviser.  The dissertation topic would normally follow from the paper, but it is also possible that an acceptable paper might lead to the conclusion that a different topic should be pursued.
Minor Field.  Econ 681 and Econ 682.  If only one of these courses is offered, then the other course could be a readings course in institutional economics or a highly complementary course from another field, the choice of which should be taken in consultation with the relevant faculty member.
Average grade of B+ or better in the courses.
