Overview of Our PhD Program
The University of Maryland’s Department of Economics is ranked in the top 25 economics programs in the country in the most recent National Academy of Sciences study. The Department has about 35 faculty members. The size and diversity of the faculty permits study in virtually every major theoretical and applied area of economics including advanced macroeconomics, advanced microeconomics, behavioral and experimental economics, comparative institutional economics, econometrics, economic development, economic history, environmental and natural resource economics, industrial organization, international trade, international finance and macroeconomics, labor economics, political economy, and public economics.
Although it is a large department, Maryland emphasizes close student-faculty interaction. Students are encouraged to meet frequently with their advisors to discuss their progress in the program. An active set of workshops provides a supportive environment for students who are working on their dissertations. Graduate faculty members are regularly accessible to students.
The Department's location near Washington, DC, allows our students to benefit from our faculty’s relationship with executive agencies, congressional policy analysts, and international finance organizations.
